Abdominal Pain

Many etiologies can cause abdominal pain or discomfort. Pain can be dull, burning, stabbing, crampy, sudden or intermittent. Pain can be located in four quadrants and also epigastric area. The four quadrants care composed of right upper quadrant, right lower quadrant, left upper quadrant and left lower quadrant. Causes of right upper quadrant pain is often caused by gall stones, gall bladder infection, liver pathologies. Right lower quadrant pain is often caused by appendicitis, and also in women can be caused by ovarian pathologies. Left upper quadrant pain is often caused by kidney stones, pancreatitis. Left lower quadrant pain is often caused by colitis and diverticulitis which is inflammation of lower colon. Epigastric pain is often caused by uncontrolled acid reflux, Gastritis which is caused by inflammation of stomach lining or a gastric ulcer. Certain other conditions can cause generalized abdominal pain in all these five locations like hernias, Viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu, food poisoning pancreatitis, mesenteric ischemia and small bowel obstruction. Diagnosis is usually made via Imaging like ultrasound or CAT scan of abdomen, management can be either be medically or surgically depending on the condition and it’s severity
