What is the flu?
The flu is a contagious upper respiratory infection caused by Infleunza type A, type B, symptoms range from fever, chills, night sweats, sore throat, dry cough, runny nose, headache, fatigue and weakness. Duration of symptoms can last from few days to few wks. Vulnerable population include elderly, children, patients with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, COPD, cancer or HIV. Complications include, Pneumonia, sepsis and even death. Treatment is usually antiviral like oseltamivir (Tamiflu®), and zanamivir (trade name Relenza®), medications work best when given withing 48 hrs of onset of symptoms, medications reduce fever, sepsis and risk of other complications. Medications can be served in either pill or liquid form.
